i just thought, it would be nice for example to have more information about something in the profile, if you do not know about it.
so let's say someone comes along and puts that they like linken park in the music section. next person looks at the profile and have no clue who linken park are. so they click on the link, linken park, and it takes them to a wickipidia entry or something. not sure how much it would be difficult to code, but it will make more sense than finding other people who share the same interests.
here's why:
using my example from earlier, if someone says they like linken park, the next person says linken-park, and the next person writes linkenpark/greenday, for example it's not easy to find a matching profile with the same user that likes the same thing. that's why i'm suggesting the artickles.
If you put a ; and a space between each thing, it puts it as a link automatically. I'm not sure how the admins have coded it, but it looks like they've used javascript for a lot of the site. You can view the source code to see how they've done it, but as I say, put for example Lincoln Park; Horses; rather than just putting commas between the words and the links will appear on different lines. I haven't tried to see if the links work, but still
The links bring you to a page that shows you all the matches for that link on the site. For example, if you click on a link that says Green Day, it will show you all the people who put that in their profile as an interest.
I see what you mean about the links not matching up because of how people write it, but that really depends on the user. It clearly says to separate each interest with a semi-colon so the links will be separate, but a lot of people don't do it, and I really don't know if there's anything the staff can do about that.
Well, if it says to o it like that and the people don't, then it's their fault that the links don't show up. That said, I'm surprised that they chose semi colons instead of commas like most sites. While the idea of making Wikipedia entries for each interest is neat, some of us have interests that are obscure enough to not be on there or that have different spellings or a page of things with similar names but only one is the one to which the person is referring etc.
try put the code yourself. such as html for some http, it might work where it might bring it to the actual link.
however, i think, is the user choice for them to find out what they wan. the resourses out there is plenty, just google it, you'll have plenty information. just, unfortunately, some are too lazy even to goole informaation...
Tiffanitsa, don't quote me on this, but I think the coding they use requires that you use semi-colons for it to work properly. I've heard this is often the case. But yes. If you want to know more about an interest, google, or any search engine should work fine, or, you can ask the person to clarify the particular interest you want to know about.
Season, not everyone knows html, so this option wouldn't be fair. OceanDream, excellent point about asking others. This might even be an interesting way to start a conversation and to get to know people. Personally, I love it when people read my profile and ask questions. That's why I've written such an extensive one.
IF you read the instructions, you do indeed have to put semi colons. Wwhile I personally don't agree and would rather see cama's used, the reason semicolons were used was because some entries could have cama's in the middle of the entry name. Not sure that made sense. If not, I'll try to explain it differently.
lol. i love how topics take a diffrent road from how they started from. really do. :)
I understand about the commas, Singer of Songs. I wasn't sure if it was that, or the way the coding was designed. I really don't know much about coding. Lol.
